Some dogs adopted from shelters or rescue organizations experience separation anxiety. This is a much misunderstood problem. Dogs who suffer from separation anxiety are not acting out to make their people angry or to "get back at them" for leaving the dog alone; these dogs are suffering very real fears and anxieties that cause them to act out. Many owners feel helpless and give up, returning dogs to shelters and rescues.
There is help for separation anxiety. See this excellent article for several great suggestions.
